Transplant Survivor Awed by Medicine and Ordinary People
Amee Bohrer survived a liver transplant as a young girl and grew up to want to learn more about medicine and the people who find hope despite diagnosis.
Most 30-year-olds don't worry about pre-existing conditions and COBRA payments, but I do. As a liver transplant survivor since 1984, medical issues permeate every aspect of my life and fuel my professional interests as a reporter. Most people associate medical crises with tragedy, and it certainly is an inevitable fact. But the medical stories which fascinate me most are those of hope, of ordinary people fighting and living on a daily basis with disease and overwhelming adversity. In 1984, liver transplantation was considered an experimental procedure and only a few leading hospitals in the country performed them with success.
