The company is seeking to have its Romeoville and Joliet stations included in the River Valley Enterprise Zone so it can qualify for state tax breaks.
The Romeoville Village Board approved enterprise zone status Wednesday for Midwest Generation, qualifying the company to receive state tax breaks needed for its $100 million environmental compliance project. Romeoville trustees signed off on an amendment that would add the Will County Generating Station in unincorporated Romeoville and the Joliet Generating Station to the the Des Plaines River Valley Enterprise Zone. Several other governments, including Will County, have taken the same action to assist the coal-fuel energy plants, officials said. The parent company of Midwest Generation, owner of coal-powered energy plants in Joliet, Romeoville and two other Illinois towns, may be headed to bankruptcy court, according to a published report. Edison Mission Energy, which is part of Edison International, owes $97 million in interest on bonds, and there is "no assurance" they money will be repaid on its Nov. 15 due date or within the 30-day grace period following that date, a story in Crain's Chicago Business. A dead body was found floating in the Des Plaines River Wednesday afternoon behind the Midwest Generation Plant on Route 6 in Joliet. Illinois State Police were dispatched to the scene at 12:48 p.m. after a fisherman found the body, according to Illinois State Police Sgt. Bill Fuentes. The river was closed for the investigation, but has since reopened. No information on the victim was released. Patch will update this story as more information becomes available.
