The strong winds Sunday knocked down Christie Summers' fence. She lives in Arbor Lakes subdivision in Minooka. That news would be bad enough, but the missing fence left an opening for her dog Rascal and he took off. The 3-year-old, black and white dog was last seen around 6 p.m. "He is friendly, but very timid," Summers said. Summers is offering a reward for the dog's return. Her phone number is 815-467-9243.

Police from nine departments pursue a Mokena man for 30-miles on Interstate 80 between Ottawa and Minooka.
A 37-year-old Mokena man led police from nine different departments on a 30-mile chase from Ottawa to Minooka. The chase ended in a crash at 5:30 a.m. Thursday. Daniel Bakalik, of the 9000 block of Cambridge Court, was apprehended in Minooka after Minooka Police assisted in the chase by placing stop sticks on Interstate 80 near the Ridge Road ramp. The sticks do not immedietly stop the vehicle, so Bakalik continued eastbound on Interstate 80 and when his car was no longer drivable, he took off on foot, Minooka Police Chief Justin Meyer said. "He was on the side of the road and where he jumped out there was a field there," Meyer said. "We set up a perimeter so he wouldn’t get into the neighborhoods." The chase began in Ottawa, when, …

Kelsi Bender, who survived a heart injury that kills 90 percent of those who sustain it, is on track to graduate on time from the University of St. Francis.
Jenny Baker used to not worry when her daughter was running late and would not text or call. But that was before the accident. “Now, if I didn’t hear from her, I’d be on the phone,” Baker said. Baker’s daughter, Kelsi Bender, suffered a multitude of injuries when she was involved in an almost-fatal accident March 2011 car accident. In addition to broken bones, a brain injury and arm damage that required extensive physical therapy, the injury to her heart was so severe that her doctors told her only 10 percent of people survive it. Yet, just over a year later, she is on the dean's list at the University of St. Francis in Joliet. She didn't miss one day of school and is on track to graduate on schedule with a nursing degree in 2013. “That’s …

Like many other departments, representatives from the Minooka Police Department took to the roof of the Dunkin Donuts to raise money for Special Olympics.
Minooka Police Chief Justin Meyer said the economy does make an impact on how much area police departments can raise in the Cop on the Rooftop fundraiser. "Last year, we raised a couple thousand dollars and we're hoping to exceed that again this year," he said. A few years ago, Minooka police were able to raise $4,000 in only a couple hours on top of the Dunkin Donuts at Ridge Road and Wabena.

The proposed single-family residence is meeting resistance from Minooka neighbors, who fear potential crime and property value loss.
Joliet-based Cornerstone Services' plans to open a group home for developmentally disabled children in Minooka, but is facing opposition from neighbors who live in the area where it is to be built. Lisa Lindaur, whose home is near where the Edgewater Street house has been proposed, organized a meeting of her River's Edge subdivision neighbors Tuesday to discuss the project. She and other opponents say the proposed single-family home could cause safety problems and result in lower property values. They also believe Cornerstone and Minooka officials have not been fully forthcoming about the project, Lindaur said. “I would like to have the open and honest dialogue of Cornerstone Services and I would like to feel safe in the neighborhood with …
