Jury Verdict Back on Vaughn Case; Decision to Be Announced Shortly

After a month of testimony, a decision on whether Christopher Vaughn murdered his wife and children to free himself for a new life in Canada is to be announced in a few minutes.

UPDATE/4:20 p.m.: The jury is back with its verdict. Just waiting for the attorneys to return to the courthouse before the decision can be read aloud.   After more than six hours of closing arguments, a Will County jury has finally gone into deliberations in the Christopher Vaughn murder case. The case is relatively black and white, with the jury having to determine whether they believe enough proof has been provided to convict the 37-year-old Oswego man of shooting his wife Kimberly and their three children, Abigayle, 12, Cassandra, 11, and Blake, 8. Defense attorneys have presented the theory that Kimberly was in fact the murderer, shooting her husband and then killing their children before turning the gun on herself. Her provocation …

Vaughn's Blood Found on His Wife's Clothes, Seat Belt, DNA Expert Testifies

Blood from both spouses found on Kimberly Vaughn's seat belt, which may have been unlatched after her death, could be a blow to the defense.

Drops of Christopher Vaughn's blood were found on his wife's shirt, shorts and the floorboard near her feet, a DNA specialist testified Friday. And drops of Kimberly Vaughn's blood were found on her husband's jacket, Illinois State Police forensic scientist Kelly Krajnik said. Taken alone or together, both seem to contradict Christopher Vaughn's story that his wife, perhaps angered by his alleged infidelity, shot him in the wrist and thigh as he sat in the driver's seat of their SUV and then -- after he fled the scene -- shot herself and their children. Perhaps just as damaging to Vaughn's defense was evidence Krajnik presented about blood from both Christopher and Kimberly Vaughn being found on the seat belt and buckle on Kimberly Vaughn'…

Vaughn Computers Show Very Different Lives

An evidence recovery technician shows data that indicates Kimberly Vaughn was interested in fixing her marriage while her husband may have been getting ready to leave it.

It was a tale of two laptops Thursday, as an evidence recovery expert detailed the contents unearthed in Kimberly and Christopher Vaughn's computer hard drives. In Kimberly's Compaq, Lisa Calarese testified, were Google searches that turned up such topics as romance tips and ways to save a failing marriage, and 133 pages of content that included the word "husband." Conversely, in Christopher's Dell were Google searches for such topics as gentlemen's clubs, making moccasins and wilderness living, and 129 pages of emails exchanged with an online friend about plans to forge a new life in Canada. How much it foretells of a collision course that would end on a frontage road near Channahon in June 2007 will be up to a Will County jury to decide…

Vaughn Planned New Life in Canada, Email Friend Says

Christoper Vaughn wrote dozens of notes about his plans to disappear into the Canadian wilderness, only briefly mentioning his wife and never his children.

Christopher Vaughn exchanged email for months with a Canadian man, discussing his elaborate plans to start a new life in the wilderness and only briefly mentioning his wife as a detail that needed to be tied up. The recipient of those notes, Stephen Willott, 31, of Ottawa, Ontario, testified at Vaughn's murder trial Friday and was asked to read to the jury dozens of letters he received from Vaughn between fall 2006 and June 2007, the month in which Vaughn allegedly killed his wife and three children. The pair met through a Web site called 43 Things and struck up an online friendship because of their mutual love of the Canadian wilderness. Within months, Vaughn --- writing under the psuedonym "Flint" -- was trading email with Willott almost…
