Blueberry Picking Season Late This Year

Tammen Treeberry Farm expects the blueberries to be ready to pick in mid to late July.

Bruce Tammen, owner of Tammen Treeberry Farm in Wilmington, is used to customers clamoring for blueberries. When he posted recently to the company's Facebook page that they had ordered another 200 buckets for blueberry picking, customers all excitedly demanded a date.
"The blueberry season might be a little later than usual this year," Tammen said on his company's Web site. "We had a late spring. It may be mid to late July when the berries are ripe."

Tammen Treeberry Farm is known for blueberry picking in the summer and for evergreen trees for the winter holidays.

"The reason the blueberries are late this year is mostly because of the cool weather last spring, in March and April," Tammen said. "It's been, for the most part, cooler than average since then."

When the blueberries are ready, they will cost $1.98 per pound and will be available for picking between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
